Effective communication must be ethical, or
it risks alienating readers. Ethical communication depends upon careful
use of language and an understanding of the cultural norms surrounding a
given writing situation. For this discussion, review this week’s APA
readings on Bias-Free Language
Links to an external site. and their General Guidelines for Reducing Bias
After
reading through both of these pages, return to the Bias-Free Language
page and choose one set of guidelines on writing: age, disability,
gender, participation in research, racial and ethnic identity, sexual
orientation, socioeconomic status, or intersectionality.
In your post, discuss the following:
- What guideline did you choose? What did you learn?
- How might the guidelines you explored be useful in writing research papers?
- How might these guidelines serve you in professional communication situations and healthcare environments related to nursing?
- What communication challenges do these guidelines present?
