1.) The Victoria Advocate article, “’We Want a Symbol of Unity’: Residents to Request Confederate Monument’s Removal.” It discusses recent controversy over a Confederate monument located in nearby Victoria, TX. It is a local example of controversy taking place on a national scale. 2.) Jordan Brasher’s and Derek H. Alderman’s provocative article in The Conversation, “A Confederate Statue Graveyard Could Help Bury the Old South.” The authors propose the idea of creating graveyards for the statues as a “first step in a much longer process of understanding, grieving and mending the wounds of America’s violent past.”
After reading these articles, write an essay that answers the following questions: What do you think should be done with Confederate monuments like “The Last Stand” statue in Victoria? Do you favor Jordan Brasher’s and Derek H. Alderman’s idea of a statue graveyard for Confederate monuments? Why or why not? Please be detailed in your response. Your response should be approximately 1-2 pages in length (double spaced).
