Part A- This is for unit activity one
- A medieval romance is a kind of writing that has a mysterious, supernatural setting, idealizes chivalry and courtly love, and may involve masking a character’s real identity. Usually the hero of a medieval romance is a knight who takes an unusual challenge and whose triumph brings glory to the king and the nation. Reread the selection from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (or you may choose to read more of it from an online source), and write an analytical essay that examines how the poem fits into the genre of medieval romances. *This assignment MUST include research from at least two cites (one for each point) that is not where you read the story. You have to have research to support your thoughts/ideas.
Part B-
Write a 4 paragraph essay (the instructions are below) explaining how SG&tGK is a medieval romance.
Paragraph 1: INTRO (at least 4 sentences)
Introduce the title and the author in a complete sentence. Include your thesis (remember, this is NOT a question). Put a hook at the end.
Paragraph 2: BODY PARAGRAPH 1 (at least 5 sentences)
Introduce your first point explaining ONE characteristic the story has that is also a characteristic of medieval romance. Put your first quote/piece of research in here. Give one quote or piece of information FROM THE STORY (in quotation marks) that is an example of the characteristic you’re talking about. The final sentences need to explain how/why that is an example of the characteristic.
Paragraph 3: BODY PARAGRAPH 2 (at least 5 sentences)
Introduce your second point explaining A DIFFERENT characteristic the story has that is also a characteristic of medieval romance. Put your second quote/piece of research in here. Give one quote or piece of information FROM THE STORY (in quotation marks) that is an example of the characteristic you’re talking about (your 2nd point). The final sentences need to explain how/why that is an example of the characteristic.
Paragraph 4: CONCLUSION (at least 4 sentences)
Restate your thesis but don’t go word-for-word. Summarize the 2 points you made (the characteristics that makes Sir Gawain and the Green Knight an example of medieval romance. Add an additional sentence but DON’T GIVE ANYTHING NEW/THAT YOU HAVEN’T DISCUSSED BEFORE.
