This paper seeks to examine the semiotic nature of emojis, comparing their use to that of words in language and evaluating their adherence to Hockett’s features of human language.

Think about the use of emojis in current communication. How do they convey meaning and how is it similar to or different from the ways that words (spoken or written) convey meaning? Think about arbitrariness/iconicity for instance. Are emojis words in a language, or something else? Think about Hockett’s features of human language that we discussed with reference to animal language. Do emojis seem to share those features?

we would like you to integrate material that we have covered in class but also reflect on your own experiences and opinions. Do not use outside sources (e.g., websites, text generation), because this is not a research paper but rather a reflection of your experience in the course. However, the paper is largely reflective in nature about your experience in the course, while informed by facts. You explain your reasoning and explore ideas. However, do not feel that you need to parrot ideas that have been presented; expand and add your own thoughts. Just make sure you are informed by facts presented in class materials first. mention this in the paper, there was in-class activity where we had to guess if the emojis shown were arbitrary or iconicity.
