Write an essay in which you explore the symbolism in “The Story of an Hour” (234) OR “A Worn Path” (384). Both stories have women as the central characters. You might consider the natural images in either story and think about how they could be symbolic.

Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to develop an argument using a literary work as your evidence. You are basically arguing for your interpretation, using evidence from the work to support your argument. Ultimately, your goal is to shed light on a particular aspect of the work so that your reader comes away with a new or different perspective.

Topic

Write an essay in which you explore the symbolism in “The Story of an Hour” (234) OR “A Worn Path” (384). Both stories have women as the central characters. You might consider the natural images in either story and think about how they could be symbolic. Remember that you want to do more than identify the symbols; you also need to explain why they are important to a reader’s understanding of the story.

Edit: Use “The Story of an Hour” preferrably

Requirements
1) Type your paper in MLA format: 12-point font, double spaced, with the proper information in the top left corner of the first page ONLY (your name, my name, course number, and date). Use the page number function to insert your last name and page number so that it will show up on every page. Refer to pages 41-43 in your textbook to see what your paper should look like as far as spacing.

2) Note the work cited entry at the top of page 43. Follow this format whenever you use a work from your textbook. The only things that will change will be the author, title, and page numbers for the work; all the other information will remain the same. Always begin a new page for your Works Cited.

3) Each body paragraph must have at least two direct quotes from the work, cited with author’s last name and page number.
