Rationale/aim
My interest in this topic begins with my commitment to women’s soccer. I have been playing soccer for 12 years and have committed to play in college. I have always played on a high level club team and varsity for high school. Within playing on these teams I have met and played with various girls who were apart of the national team (youth and adult). Recently on Netflix they released “Under Pressure” a documentary following the United States women’s national team in preparing and taking part in the FIFA women’s world cup in 2023. While binging this documentary I noticed that there was an emphasis on how the U.S. team has been dominant since the women’s world cup was introduced, the inequality of pay between the men’s and women’s teams, and how more governments have been working to develop their women’s programs. Within the documentary they explained how the women’s world cup was introduced after and the programs for the women were extremely underrepresented and developed. Therefore I wanted to engage and see how government investment within womens soccer has either helped or not helped women’s teams get better as the men’s first FIFA world cup was in 1930 and the women’s was in 1991. Therefore my aim is to see how government investment within womens soccer has either helped or not helped women’s teams get better.
