A classmate’s post in regards to this topic:

This has been an interesting question to consider. My thought is leaning in the direction that we cannot perceive something without it having been sensed to some degree at some point in life. However, I do think we can perceive something even if we are not sensing it at that exact moment. For example, I can picture a beach in my mind and perceive the feeling of the ocean breeze, however, I had to have had the experience of sensing a breeze, whether oceanside or elsewhere, at some point in my life for me to even imagine what that breeze may feel like. I can perceive the warm, buttery, cinnamon flavors and the scent of a cinnamon roll just by thinking about it, but that is only possible because I have tasted those flavors, whether together or separately, and smelled that delicious scent at some point in the past. I can perceive the sight of a beautiful sunrise in my mind, and all the colors within it, but how could I do that if I’ve never sensed the beauty and difference in each of those colors at some other time so that I can create that sunrise within my imagination? I suppose we can create perceptions in our imagination without ever having sensed them, but then how accurate would our perception be in that scenario?
