Write an essay exploring the concept of ‘home’ and what it means to you. Is home a physical place, a feeling, or something else entirely? Consider how personal experiences, cultural backgrounds, and societal expectations shape people’s understanding.

  1. Use this as an outline for the thesis paragraph, “The word ‘home’ is much more than just an address for most people. Realizing your own
meaning of home can put someone at ease and give them a sense of safety. Vernon Baker states,
“Home is where the heart can laugh without shyness. Home is where the heart’s tears can dry at
their own pace” (1). The feeling of security can provoke one to go into their true selves. Even
though a family has a physical house, it doesn’t mean they think of it as being their home (qtd. in
Edwards). The idea that home is more than just a physical place can be influenced by
experiences, cultural backgrounds, and societal expectations. Home means more than a house; it
means the people that make you feel welcomed and not judged.”
  2. Make the essay fouccusing about feeling at ‘home’ at my grandparents house you can use this personal reflection to usnderstand more of my perspective of this: In my opinion, home is both a real place and something special in many aspects. An ideal home means different things at the same time. Home is not just about having a place; it’s about owning and having a personal space for you and your loved ones. It’s safety, a safe place for cherished family memories—in some cases, memories of an entire life! Sometimes it can be two whole different families who have lived their lives in the same home. Depending on the age of the home, it can be for multiple generations. To me personally, it’s a physical place of safety that is shared with the people and pets I love the most. For the rest of my life, it will hold a huge part of all my life’s memories that I will always look back on in happiness and hold dearly. Home is also a place that people have the right to defend and protect, which is one of the most important aspects of everyone’s life.

For me, home is where I feel most comfortable. Where I would pick to go when I’m having a rough day. Where I don’t need to put on an act; I can just be myself, openly and without the fear of being judged. In my case, it is the houses and people I have lived with since I was born. The houses I view as home are my parents house and my grandparents house, which are no longer with us today. Losing my grandparents and having to put up their house for sale was the moment I realized what home actually meant. I would spend every day at their house before and after school while waiting for my parents to get off of work. Being with my grandparents in the four walls of their home was what made a big chunk of my childhood memorable. Having to witness what I called my home all get taken out of my life within a span of two years broke me. To this day, I will always recognize my grandparents and their house as part of my home.

Home can mean more than a house; it can mean people, a place, and a moment. In the big picture of life, I believe home is a lot of things to everyone, but I would imagine they would agree with me on my main points about what home means. I know how much I will miss the home I grew up in and still live in. I learned the hard way when my grandparents passed away and I lost my second home, and already I look back on the great memories I had with them in that home and all the fun, laughs, sleepovers, and holidays we shared there. I know I will cherish the days and memories I have left in my home.
