In a 4-5 page paper (double-spaced, 12 pt. font), you will critically analyze Star Wars, a new hope for how it represents issues of language, identity, and language ideologies. To do so, you will apply Lippi-Green’s analytical framework on linguistic stereotyping (this is the What We Learn from the Big Bad Wolf reading in the Week 6 tile). Note: while anything within the Disney canon works well within this framework, it is broadly applicable to other media forms, and you cannot use one of the movies discussed at length in the assigned reading.
In your analysis, address patterns that relate to Lippi-Green’s original findings and consider the following questions:
· Why are characters portrayed this way?
· What does their accent/dialect tell you about the character?
· How do these patterns play into or subvert existing linguistic stereotypes that you know about?
· How do these patterns relate to the idea of standard language ideology?
· Any additional conclusions you draw based on what you’ve found.
In writing on this topic, I want you to please be careful that you are not simply summarizing the plot or describing character actions and attitudes.
Paper Guidelines:
· Your paper should include a short introduction that concludes with a strong thesis statement or question that clearly asserts what you will argue or analyze in your paper. Your thesis statement needs to be specific, mainly because this is a short paper.
· You must back up your argument with evidence and examples (quotes directly from the movie or TV show) and with quotes from Lippi-Green (1997).
· Don’t get bogged down in plot summaries, definitions, long explanations of concepts, or anything else that takes away valuable space for analysis and individual thought. While it is necessary to set context, you need no more than a few sentences to do this.
· Make sure you add a short conclusion that summarizes your overall argument or point or answers the questions you have asked.
