7-2 Discussion response post: The Relationship Between Social Sciences, Methodologies, and Data Types

instructions-

choose a peer who are studying a social science field different from yours. As you review your peers’ initial posts, answer at least two of the following questions as you compare patterns of methodology choices in their social science and yours:

  • Do you see other limits in their social science that they did not identify?
  • What might the impact of those limits be?
  • How do the methodology and data types preferred by their social science compare to those preferred by yours? Are there overlaps? Major differences?
  • What do you see as the impact of these preferences, and is there something that could be gained in their social science if they were to embrace some of the methodologies and data types used by your social science?

respond to Nicholas’ initial discusiion post

The research I focused on the relationship between individuals in prison for drug crimes and the recidivism rate in America.  I want to find a correlation between people who went to prison for drug crimes and if they stayed out of prison or went back for drugs crimes and why.  From the different methodologies I researched I found that there was more qualitative data involved than qualitative.  You would think that it would be the other way around but since there is the “why” component in there, more quantitative data would show up.  Although I think mixed methods would be the best for answering my questions that I have the more concrete data I see is coming from quantitative research data.  The qualitative data shows the stats which is only one small part of the story.  My field of study is addiction counseling and figuring out the “why” of drug addiction is what makes this field interesting and compelling to me.  Hearing about other people’s experiences and perspectives is interesting to listen to and the data pulled from it really helped me understand the relationship between the two sets of data.
