Analysis
IDENTIFY PATHOS,LOGOS,or ETHOS IN THE ARTICLE
Make a claim about how the text works.
Identify one specific rhetorical strategy that the author uses to persuade the audience (or not). Note: There are likely many things going on rhetorically in the text, but for this very brief analysis, we ask that you find one strategy to focus on and deeply analyze.
Use direct evidence drawn from the text (e.g. direct quotations or paraphrases/summaries of specific passages or moments) to support your analytic claims. (You may also choose to use contextual evidence in addition to textual evidence to support your claims.)
Demonstrate how the text works within its unique context and for its specific intended audience(s).
DIRECTIONS:
After reading the different ways in which messages persuade (Allyn & Bacon 4.1-4.3), take some time to brainstorm your analysis paragraph.
What means of persuasion will you focus on in your analysis? Why did you select this mode of persuasion?
What claim (a statement of argument that can be proven) will you make about how the author has employed this mode of persuasion to influence the readers?
Make a list of 3-5 specific pieces of evidence from your selected article that you can use to support your claim. FOR EACH PIECE OF EVIDENCE, explain why and how that piece of evidence helps to support your claim. You may need to take some time to analyze how that specific piece of evidence rhetorically influences the reader.
