The Impacts of Unsafe Nurse-to-Patient Ratios on Health Outcomes for Nurses and Patients

4-5 pages maximum of text,

Note: Paper MUST be written in the third person voice. Each section on the grading grid is of equal weight. Headings and subheadings must be used in the paper as per APA 7th ed.

This paper will include: (Please use headings in your paper to organize it – see appropriate headings in APA 7th format)

1)    Introduction: An introduction to the paper – 1 paragraph (3-4 sentences long). Introduction to the topic and what the purpose of this paper is. Example: This paper will describe the “topic”, the search strategies used to prepare the literature review, a comprehensive review of the literature supporting the topic and summary of the knowledge gained.

2)    Description of the topic (This is basically the research outline you wrote): A brief description of the topic of interest and why it is important, with references to support (2 paragraphs).

3)    Search Strategy: A general discussion and rationale for search strategies used to conduct the electronic search: key terms, indexes, limits on search, Boolean operators. (your librarian is an expert at teaching you this – and look at examples on the library resource page on how to write this up).

Example:

This literature review utilized multiple databases with the following search terms: telehealth, barriers to care, geographical barriers to care, access to sexual assault care, rural health care, rural access to sexual assault care, the feasibility of telehealth for rural patients, time to care, time to care for sexual assault and access to forensic care in-home community. All Seneca library databases were used and the search was conducted utilizing the following limiters: full-text, peer-reviewed, and English-language published between 2017 and 2021. In total, 20 articles were obtained and reviewed and a final 3 articles were selected as the best available to support this literature review.

4)    Literature Review (This is your annotated bibliography expanded): An overview of the literature search findings- summarize your annotated bibliographies.

Your literature should review each article in its own paragraph and should look at some or all of the following (depending on what kind of article it is):

what was their clinical question or purpose or hypothesis?

      what was their sample population?

what intervention did they apply to their population or what did they study about their population?

what methodology and project design did they use?

what were their findings and results?

Example Literature Review Paragraph:

The first article reviewed was Carter-Snell et al. (2020). The purpose of this project was to work with five Canadian communities to identify service gaps for sexual assault services and any gaps in support needs before examining a solution and evaluating the effectiveness of the solution. The scope of the study is limited to the five Canadian communities discussed in the article (Carter-Snell et al., 2020). The research question asked if the implementation of education, resource development and interprofessional supports would increase the providers comfort to provide post assault care, knowledge, and quality of care (Carter-Snell et al., 2020). The population being sampled in this article is the five rural or remote communities in Ontario in which one has a significant Indigenous population. Qualitative data was obtained using an exploratory approach before and after interventions (Carter-Snell et al., 2020). There was an overlap in the themes across all five communities. The two key areas that were identified in the findings were: enhanced collaborative service, and ongoing gaps (Carter-Snell et al., 2020). A change in community identity was identified with communities seeing themselves as now capable and collaborative. Challenges in service that remained were the ongoing turnover of staff, limited number of cases seen to remain competent with care, and the lack of personnel resources (Carter-Snell et al., 2020). Surveys showed comfort providing services increased on both by 1 month and 6-month surveys. Quality of service ratings showed a large improvement in perceived opinion of the time it took to get the survivor or sexual assault into health care (Carter-Snell et al., 2020). The studies summary concludes that collaboration between communities is important to share resources. They also demonstrated the need for sexual assault nurse examiners (FNEs) as mentors, as well as to focus increased education on collection of evidence versus new skills (Carter-Snell et al., 2020). In addition, a key gap in this research is the sexual assault survivors’ perspective of service changes. The gap identified for future research is the inclusion of survivors’ perspective of service changes (Carter-Snell et al., 2020).

5)    Summary of Knowledge Gained: How does the literature support or add to the knowledge needed for your topic to improve nursing practice? This should include a summary of knowledge gained based on the 3 articles discussed. The summary should identify the overall, important knowledge gained from these articles; what questions remain to be addressed by future research, across all the reviewed articles; and the implications for future nursing practice or health care and impact on client care outcomes.

6)    Conclusion: A brief conclusion to the paper which addresses any remaining knowledge you wish to acquire about this topic or further research needed on it.
