Instructions
Formatting and Style for Final Draft
- Essay must be between 1,000–1,200 words in length (excluding title and reference page).
- Please use 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spacing, with a 1-inch margin on all sides.
- Please use APA citation format. Use this link if you need help with APA formatting and reference.
- Paper must cite at least one physical book or scholarly article as a reference. The rest of your citations must pull from the readings for Foundation Units 1–3. APA references for the unit readings have already been provided: see “LING_102_Reference_List.pdf” in the ‘Resources’ folder on Laulima. As for finding a scholarly article, I recommend using the UH Library website or Google Scholar. NO WIKIPEDIA.
Midterm Prompt
The objective of the midterm paper is to demonstrate your understanding of the content from the Foundation Units. As such, this prompt will give you the opportunity to relate the course material to your own experiences and outside knowledge.
Observe your own language use, both in spoken interaction and the written communications you have with other people. Write an essay that details examples of your own creative usage of language by giving the context, pattern, meaning, motivation, and function of your creative productions. Give examples for the following types of creative productions:
- Describe words that you have created from pre-existing words (e.g., happyish) or words that you intentionally pronounce in an interesting or ‘funny’ way (e.g., I sometimes text the word schleppy instead of ‘sleepy’ to my friends).
- Describe intentional intonation patterns and gestures that express certain emotions or attitudes of your speech (e.g., if a fellow student asked how my midterm season is going, I might respond with a sheepish, elongated “great,” paired with a forced smile).
- Describe intentional “ungrammatical” language usage. Offer what the prescriptive grammar would dictate, then explain how your production deviates (e.g., I often drop the subject of my sentences. Instead of saying ‘I am hungry,’ I’d likely say am hungry or even am hunger).
