Over the past decade, biomedical research has increasingly turned to the plant world to conduct experiments. In this essay, we are asking you to write an essay that delves into the ethical considerations surrounding the practice of conducting research involving plants. Your task is to critically analyze the ethical dimensions inherent in working with plant organisms, taking into account a variety of perspectives and ethical frameworks that you have been exposed to within this course.
As you formulate your thoughts, keep in mind that ethics goes beyond processes (i.e., “how do we do something”?), pros and cons, and legal boundaries (“Is it legal” or “can it become illegal”?). All of those considerations provide context. Ethics though explore whether actions are justified and should or ought be undertaken. Rarely are there straightforward answers.
This analysis should not solely rely on the instructor-provided readings. You are encouraged to seek out a diverse range of reputable sources to inform your essay. You might want to transpose the lessons you’ve learned through the discussion about animal research, you might not.
By engaging with various ethical frameworks, philosophies, and perspectives, you will develop a well-rounded understanding of the moral implications of plant research.
