Title of Essay: “How has my Statement of Philosophy evolved from the beginning and towards the completion of my program of study”

In NUR 704, you wrote your Statement of Philosophy. Based on that, examine what changes have occurred since you began the Master’s program, considering all your courses, experiences and course artifacts that influenced the evolution of your current Statement of Philosophy. Use ALL your courses and artifacts as evidence to substantiate the changes when you write this essay for NUR 708. Include what you wish to improve on, as well as those that you believe you can continue to enhance.

In your ePortfolio, indicate the date of the Statement of Philosophy you wrote in N704. For this new Statement of Philosophy for N708, date it with the current date.

Write a 2-page essay that addresses the following

  • What is the relevance of your philosophy to your specialty in the MS Program? What was your philosophy of nursing (Education, Administration, or Nurse Practitioner) when you started the program and how does this compare to your current philosophy of nursing?
  • What is the essence of the role of the MS-prepared nurse in the ongoing development of nursing and in meeting society’s needs for quality health care?
  • How do you envision integrating being a leader and change agent in the evolving future of nursing education or nursing practice? What strategies will you use to contribute to the future of nursing?
  • Criteria
  • Make sure to use various courses/ artifacts, as you have taken many different courses in your program of study. Do not repeat the same courses or use only core courses when you demonstrate your achievement of the Essentials of Master Education. In citing artifacts in your four reflection essays, there should be a variety of courses to demonstrate achievement of the competencies and goals of your program. If you are in the NP track, most of your artifacts need to show your competence as a NP; NED majors should show artifacts to show goal achievement of being a nurse educator; and likewise, for those in the NAD program. Of course, you can use the core courses, but never should the core courses be the only course artifacts used in your four reflection essays.
  • Since these are Reflection Essays, there is no need for citations and references. However, you need to remember to type your name on the top left, the reflection essay #, and the date you wrote the essay.
  • All completed and graded Reflection Essays will need to be uploaded in the appropriate tab in your ePortfolio. Reflection Essays must be a maximum of 2 pages (no more), double-spaced, and 1” margin on all sides.

As I recall my
philosophy at the start of the MS nurse practitioner program at Adelphi
University, not much has changed.  My
philosophy has been and continues to be to care for others regardless of race,
religion, creed, and sexual orientation. The essence of my approach boils down to treating
people the way I wish to be treated and ensuring the delivery of quality care
to all.

Embarking on NUR-636-ANP: Adult
Health Nursing I Clinical, I found myself in the role of a novice NP,
navigating the unfamiliar territory of seeing and caring for patients not as a
nurse but as a provider.  Having the
ability to not just carry out orders such as medicating, starting an IV, drawing
bloodwork but to be the one ordering, diagnosing, and verifying all awhile
putting my patients’ preferences first.  Collaboration
with patients, considering their perspectives in decision-making, became key,
though ultimate decisions were not solely dictated by them. To provide my
patients’ quality care whether it be preventative, or ongoing treatments for
hypertension and diabetes to name a few.

Society and healthcare are dynamic.  As an MS-prepared nurse the development of quality
health care is required to meet the demands of society.
Achieving
quality healthcare entails stepping back to observe patients, their families,
and ourselves, paying attention to verbal and non-verbal cues.
We need to focus on the many aspects
before providing this quality care.  Our
patients need to be receptive in making lifestyle modifications, whether it be
starting a new medication or regimen to improve their health.  Partnering with our patients is what is needed
for the best possible outcome.

Progressing through my MS program,
entering NUR-646-ANP: Adult Health Nursing II Clinical brought me back to the
same clinical site as ANP I Clinicals. This revisit allowed me to apply the
knowledge gained in lectures, building confidence and fostering positive
patient relationships.

There I had the ability to gain
confidence in the knowledge I obtained in lecture class and apply it at the
clinical site with the patients being seen.
Gaining a rapport with patients who were able to see me again helped create
trusting relationships, including providing positivity towards the care I rendered.  I can truly see my progression in the MS
program and the knowledge I have gained.

Now, transitioning to NUR-655-ANP:
Adult Health Nursing III Clinical, the reality is sinking in that soon I will
cease to be an NP student and become a Nurse Practitioner. The prospect is
somewhat stressful, requiring trust in the knowledge and experiences acquired.
The mantra remains to prioritize patients, while self-care is crucial to
sustain the nurse practitioner I aspire to be. Recognizing the availability of
resources and guidance from colleagues, including MDs and Nurse Practitioners,
provides reassurance.

Down the line, I would love to teach
future nursing undergraduate students. Past experiences as a nurse preceptor
revealed the fulfillment of guiding confident, eager learners who appreciated
the insights I shared.  Looking into the
future and becoming part of leadership, I feel I need to practice clinically
and see what the population I care for needs.
Based on that, I could then take a stance in being proactive in
healthcare, however, it remains to be seen.
