The primary purpose of this assessment is
to facilitate your ability to research new fads in nutrition for exercise and
performance, and determine their effectiveness physiologically and
biochemically on performance using the evidence-base.
There is mounting information in media and social media that having menthol will lead to improved performance in exercise, training and
competition. For this assessment you will write a research report of 2,000
words on an ergogenic aid, responding to the question:
Can menthol keep
your athlete cool and boost their performance?
You will first assess the evidence you find in the scientific
literature on whether the use of menthol
(co-ingested with or incorporated into a gel or cold/iced-slurry beverage) leads to improved performance and
present your findings in the form of an evidence table. Then you will write the
report which includes a summary of the evidence, reputed biochemical and/or
physiological pathways, and the recommendations based on the evidence including
AIS categorisation. Where required, templates and other supports are provided
to assist you in responding to this task.
Instructions
There are two related parts to this assessment piece, which need to
be submitted together in
ONE document. The word count for this assessment is 2000 words (guidance is
provided below on the word count for each part). The word count DOES include
in-text referencing and the evidence table and DOES NOT include diagrams, other
tables, legends and reference lists. If you are over or under the total word
count by 10% then marks are deducted (refer to the marking guide). The exception to this is where
students have presented seven or more articles in their literature summary
table.
When considering references for your answers,
you may use the course readings, but are also expected to research information
more widely and refer to additional literature. Remember that in many instances
the videos provided in the weekly materials are for teaching and illustrative
purposes, so it is expected that you use scholarly publications for your
assessments rather than reference these sources.
This assessment requires referencing. You must
use the APA 7 referencing system for in-text references and your reference list for ALL material which is
not your own. This includes academic references, quality primary sources e.g.
government websites, images apart from your own, and online articles.
