Synthesis Paper #1
Synthesis papers are intended for you to combine information and ideas, draw conclusions, and make an argument based on your analysis of multiple sources. For this synthesis paper, you are to think about how the secondary sources you have read relate to one another. In writing a synthesis, you attempt to make sense of the ideas of multiple sources by extracting information that is relevant to your argument. You will use the arguments of others as supporting evidence or as subjects of disagreement in your own argument.
For this paper, you must reference four readings from the first six weeks of the course. That includes: Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Moynihan, and Wideder Although you can include the media sources from class in your paper
Synthesis Paper #1 question:
In Elaine Brown’s song “The End of Silence,” she sings that “dignity, not just equality” is what makes a person whole. Make an argument about the relationship between dignity and freedom using only course readings (a minimum of four required)
To successfully complete your Synthesis Paper:
- Paper will be structured around your argument and use the readings to support your statements. The paper will not just summarize what each author says and/or thinks.
- Paper will be organized around ideas, not authors. Synthesis means putting sources in dialogue, not discussing one author, then another author, and another.
- Paper must be between 750-1,000 words (3-4 pages).
- Typed, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins.
- Use Times New Roman and 12-point font.
- Pages should be numbered in the bottom left hand corner.
- Be sure to use appropriate support from your sources. A
