1. Thesis Statement/Argument/Structure
o A good paper must have a clear thesis statement, logical development of your argumentation, and coherent and clear structural organization and clear writing

2. Introduction and Conclusion
o Any history paper should contain an introductory paragraph at the beginning of the paper that offers brief introduction to the material
o The introductory paragraph must also briefly introduce your main argument and the primary points you intend to make in the paper
o Any history paper must contain a final concluding paragraph that summarizes your findings. The conclusion should restate the main argument and summarize the important ideas presented in the paper
o Therefore, the concluding paragraph is not the place to introduce new ideas that are not previously stated in the essay
o It is always good if the introductory and concluding paragraphs of your paper are in your own words (avoiding direct quotations from the required text in these paragraphs).
3. Evidence
o All arguments must be substantiated by evidence. Use direct quotations and specific examples from the text to illustrate your points
o You have to quote The River Between at least four times throughout your paper
o Each time you quote from The River Between, you must also include immediately after the quotation your analysis
o Please do not use a quotation without interpreting its significance or indicating how it relates to a point that you are trying to make
o If the quote is longer than four lines, it must be single-spaced and indented
o You must cite both direct quotes as well as any information and ideas acquired from the text even if you do not directly quote
