5th week writing exercise: humor and satire/ 5th week discussion: pitching yourself using rhetoric

Instruction for discussion 1 humor and satire:

This topic is based on the Module this week, so be sure you’ve read it carefully.

  1. Read this articleLinks to an external site. on the nine types of humor:  physical, self-deprecating, surreal, improvisational, wit / wordplay, topical, observational, bodily, dark.  What type of humor do you have?  What sorts of things do you find unfunny that others seem to laugh at?
  2. Using the Borowitz ReportLinks to an external site., The OnionLinks to an external site., and the previous satirical videos, write your own satire. It should be a paragraph long (six to ten sentences).  Remember that satire ridicules some aspect of society. Satire imagines an event or a dialogue that did not actually happen. NOTE:  Your satire piece should be framed as a “fake news article,” as in the links above.  It should not be just commentary or opinion about a topic.  Again, it must be arranged as a fake news article.

Instruction for discussion 2
  1. Select two of the rhetorical techniques listed above and define them. Examples help. Please choose two not already chosen by your classmates, so we get exposed to a variety of new rhetorical tools. (2 points) (Google is your friend when you find definitions, but your examples should be in your own words.) These are all terms that appear in our weekly Reading Notes, by the way 🙂
  2. Jay Heinrichs writes, “The ideal trait [in a CEO is] . . . the ability to tell a compelling life story and make yourself desirable.” Imagine you’re in the elevator with the CEO of your dream job–tell us his or her name as well as that of the company and job title you desire. You have thirty seconds to sell yourself to him or her, so write a 4-5 sentence monologue expressing how your skills and temperament match the company’s needs and values!  Try to use a rhetorical technique, though you are not required to. Do not talk about how much you want to work for the company, how it’s your dream, etc.  Instead, identify the company’s specific needs and confidently share what you in particular can do to benefit the company. (1 point)
  3. Reply to at least two classmates. (2 points)
