1. Titles of SHORT THINGS (stories, poems, and
essays) need to be put in QUOTATION MARKS and CAPITALIZED: “The Lottery,”
“Harlem”
2. Titles of LONG THINGS (books, plays, and
websites) need to be put in ITALICS and CAPITALIZED: Othello, The Edgar Allan Poe

3. All proper names should be CAPITALIZED:
Langston Hughes, Sylvia Plath.
4. Authors should be referred to by their FULL
name the first time you mention them (Shirley Jackson). Afterwards, use only their LAST name (Jackson).
1. You need to use AT LEAST ONE QUOTE (exact
words) from each of your readings AND your outside research sources. When quoting, introduce the quote by
mentioning the author and the text, give the quote (in quotation marks).
