Analysis of a speech with the use of rhetoric Analysis of a speech with the use of rhetoric

Choose 1 speech you are unfamiliar with from the 5 options I have posted under Week 8 (speeches are posted by the following orator’s names).
– Chief Sagoyewatha
– Severn Suzuki
– Charlie Chaplin
– Elie Wiesel
– Josephine Baker

If you want to do a speech not given, you are free to do so since there are many great speeches to choose from; however you must choose a speech you are unfamiliar with.

Listen and watch the speeches (if possible) and do some light research on the person giving the speech, the speech’s purpose and context, and when/where the speech was given.

Locate and identify all types of rhetorical devices used in the speech (You can choose how to present this information — do what you think makes the most sense).

There may be some overlap of rhetorical devices and that is fine! I have attached a couple of documents that describe some rhetorical devices but be aware that there are many more! You may want to expand outside of the ones that are provided in the linked documents.

For the final component, provide a 500 word write up on your analysis of the orator’s use of rhetoric. Consider their audiences, the exigence of the situation, cultural historical context/background information, and the orators personal history and ethos. Does the speech employ the four rhetorical appeals or only a couple; which ones do they use? In your opinion was the speech successful; in what ways was it or was it not successful (this need not be interpreted in effecting lasting systemic change, but perhaps being successful in smaller ways). Consider the differences in reading the speech versus listening and watching the speech.

Turn in both the 500 word write up AND the document that points out the use of rhetorical devices in your chosen speech.
