  1. INTRODUCTION 1-2 paragraphs    : In your introduction, please explain the PURPOSE of this essay – to analyze your use and understanding of media and removal of confirmation bias.
    • Let your reader know how you typically get your news (on Twitter, TikTok, other socials?) and think through the benefits and disadvantages of your digestion of media. Really ask yourself: am I a consistent critical thinker in my approach to the news? How might I struggle with confirmation bias?
    • Then, provide a full and cohesive look at the topic you selected to analyze and your opinion. Explain what the topic is and why it is controversial and timely. This is where you get to state your opinion.
 
  1. FOR EACH EXPERT You should analyze the following areas of each “subject matter expert.” If you cannot find information on them, you may want to find a different resource. You can do this any way you see fit but make sure EACH bolded term is fully explained (recall how to do this through SEEI method)
    •  Authorial Content: Do some digging to find out who the “subject matter experts” are. For example, are they a consistent writer for the news outlet? Do they have a Twitter account with a political slant? Look for Ethos—some credibility here. If they are mainly a TikTok resource for you, why do you trust them? How have they established credibility and is it viable?
    • Elements: POV, Purpose, Assumptions. Please use textual support and cite!
    • Standards: Depth, Accuracy, Clarity, Logic
 
III. CONCLUSION: Once you evaluate the articles, explain this process to me.
  • Analyze how you felt reading multiple perspectives and going specifically to the databases as well. What was frustrating or enlightening?
  • What “subject matter expert” did you find really demonstrated critical thinking and what does this say about the author/influencer and/or news outlet? Please be specific in defending your decision by looking at each of your Element/Standard evaluations.
  • CONFIRMATION BIAS: How does completing an assignment like this prevent or at least lessen the chance of confirmation bias? Please explain.
 
**Be sure to note the author’s use of factual statements and opinions while keeping a keen eye for bias and propaganda. Pull quotes from articles, passages from socials, and cite when necessary. Remember to be skeptical and look for the gaps and weaknesses in each “expert” and the resource you select. This essay is not really about YOUR opinion but your analysis of these resources.
