I read the phrase, “College is my middle name.” on Northwestern’s brochure. The biggest reason why I thought Northwestern University should be my middle name is because of the Chicago field study program, the flexibility of a double major, and the activeness of arts and physical education. As soon as I decided to change schools, the first thing I thought about was the diversity of the school. Many schools had their own specialties, but among them, Northwestern University was widely known academically and excelled in both arts and sports.
I felt that these thoughts definitely served as a strength of the school through the “purple preview program” I participated in when visiting the school. The class I observed was a business proposal (business writing) class, in which each student proposed improvements to the organization they participated in. Most of the students taking the class had internship experience or were planning to do so at companies in Chicago through the Chicago field study program. What’s surprising is that this can be done during the semester, and you can even get credit for it. When I thought about the location of the school, I could clearly feel that being near the city center and companies puts students directly into society. It was a program I knew about through an existing campus tour, but I found it surprising that after hearing the students’ direct experiences, there was even a class that suggested improvements to the internship companies they participated in. I also want to participate in the Chicago field study program, take CFS395: Business Workplace Culture, enter a company I am interested in, gain internship experience while attending school, and become a member of society by the time I graduate. After class, I asked the students how they chose the company, and many of them had a minor or double major. In particular, after hearing that a student majoring in journalism and a business minor was pursuing a career in business communication or marketing, I was hopeful that the flexibility of a double major would help me determine my ultimate career path.
In terms of school life, the fact that there were many arts and sports clubs seemed to me to be a big advantage. Art and exercise have never been separate from each other in my life. The reason why I continued to study arts and physical education is because I knew that arts and physical education were essential for finding myself, understanding others, and being with others, and I think Northwestern University is well equipped with this. I would like to attend bel canto ballet at Northwestern University and resume the dancing I did as a child.
Likewise, I believe that I will fit in well with the school because Northwestern is a perfect all-dimension school in terms of academics, arts, and physical education. I have always lived a life that does not miss out on various areas.
