For the first paragraph, focus on satire in Moliere’s Tartuffe. Include the satire definition from the key terms and concepts item in this module and quote it. If you use words from the definition again in your discussion, quote the words.
Identify and discuss where you see satire in the characters words or actions? Explain how the examples are satire. Provide lots of proof (at least 4 or more quotes directly from work). Close this paragraph with what you believe to be a major message from this work still relevant (relatable) today. What could modern society learn about the “follies” or poor behavior of the people Moliere writes about?
Remember to avoid going online and reading anything about the work. Base your comments on the quotes. If you have questions, a good place to talk to classmates would be the Coffee Shop discussion board.
FOR EXAMPLES OF HOW TO QUOTE FROM THE PLAY, SEE THE SEPARATE QUOTING ITEM IN THE ASSESSMENT SECTION OF THE MODULE (THE NEXT ITEM AFTER THIS ONE IN THE MODULE). Keep in mind accurate quoting and citing are part of your grade.
Skip a line and go to the next paragraph.
For the second paragraph, focus on satire in Swift’s A Modest Proposal. Remember he does not literally mean to eat babies. He is using satire to show the problems of Ireland, the callousness of people who take advantage of others who could actually help make the dire problems better, and also challenging his own Irishmen to take action to help themselves. Identify and discuss where you see satire in this hypothetical proposal to solve the issue of poverty in Ireland. Start with the title and then look at who he is pointing a finger at. Check the entire work rather than just a few passages from one place. Provide lots of proof (at least 4 direct quotes or more). Explain how the examples are satire. What is he showing about the situation people don’t want to see? Who is he chastising about inappropriate behavior? How is he making those who could do something feel guilty about not acting?
Close this paragraph with what you believe to be a major message from this work still relevant (relatable) today? What is Swift pointing out about his own country that seems to be like situations or actions you see around you today either locally or nationally?
These 2 paragraphs should be the main focus of your writing with the most development and include evidence you have re-read the work and researched proof (quotes) about the satire.
Remember to avoid going online and reading anything about the work. Base your comments on the quotes. If you have questions, a good place to talk to classmates would be the Coffee Shop discussion board.
Your last paragraph is about identifying satire in modern examples. Choose 2 of the video links below to discuss in the last paragraph.
Illustrate the satire by pointing out details from the videos and explain how they are satirical. Include at least 4 quotes directly from the sources (2 each for 4 total or more). Show what modern “follies” the satires show us about ourselves today and how we might need to change.
(Punctuation hint: Italics major things like TV shows, movies, and books and quote smaller things like a song.)
Here are the links to modern satire. Choose 2 to discuss.

Close by discussing what role modern satire has in our society. Include several modern examples of where we can find such satire in the media like TV, movies, songs, books, etc . . . beyond the ones provided above. Why do we need satire? What purpose does it serve?
