Analyzing Kennedy’s conduct during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the context of Robert H. Jackson’s essay “The Situational Ethics of Statecraft.”

Read and consider Robert H. Jackson’s essay “The Situational Ethics of Statecraft.”   Jackson emphasizes the importance of the historical situation or context in making an ethical judgment regarding foreign policy decisions. He calls his approach “situational ethics.” Use Jackson’s approach to explain and evaluate an American policy decision during the Cold War or the post-Cold War era, discussing the merits and weaknesses of that policy.  Answer questions such as the following: What were the specific issues and concerns that dictated this policy decision?  How did the immediate political and historical context play a role in the decision-making?  Finally, do you think that the president you are discussing made a decision that is ethically defensible––”the best choice under the circumstances”––according to Jackson’s situational ethics standard.
