In this assignment, you will explore the integration of Agile project management methods,
specifically Scrum, within the context of the generic 4-phase project life cycle as defined by
the Project Management Institute (PMI). You will analyze the challenges and situations where

The PMI’s generic 4-phase project life cycle consists of:
• Starting the project: Defining the project scope, objectives, and stakeholders.
• Organizing and preparing: Planning resources, schedules, and risk management.
• Carrying out the work: Executing tasks, monitoring progress, and managing changes.
• Closing: Finalizing deliverables, evaluating project success, and transitioning.

1. Suppose a medium sized organization (100 – 499 employees) wants to enhance its legacy
system. Assume that you were hired by the executive team as a system analysis and
development consultant on this project that is fairly complex and with fairly high
uncertainty associated with the project. Assume that the project team intends to use Agile
project management approach/methodology.
o Consider factors like stability, existing documentation, and user expectations.
o Consider user feedback, iterative refinement, and adaptability.
o Discuss the challenges of integrating Scrum with the PMI life cycle. Consider aspects
such as:
▪ Balancing flexibility and structure.
▪ Handling changing requirements during sprints.
▪ Ensuring collaboration across phases.
2. Propose an approach to integrate Scrum into the PMI life cycle for this scenario. Describe
what they should do (as well as when and why) to effectively run their project using Agile
project management methodologies. I recommend providing detailed explanations for your
proposed actions (the How), ensuring clarity regarding the recommended approach and its
implementation. Additionally, emphasize the value and necessity (the Why) of these
practices in achieving project success.2
Provide a well-reasoned justification for your recommendations. Explain how it aligns with the
context of the scenario, nature of the product, and other factors. The justification should link
back to the concepts from the Week 1 (Ch. 1) and Week 7 (Ch. 6).
