Option 1: Globalization’s Effect on Culture
In your textbook, Experience Sociology, Fourth Edition, review Chapter 3, “Culture.” You may also want to review Durkheim’s view on social solidarity in Chapter 1, “Sociology in a Changing World”, and the section on cultural power in Chapter 5, “Power.”
Then consider the following statements:
Some people argue that globalization erodes cultural traditions and leads to a weakening of social solidarity. Others argue that globalization encourages the sharing of cultural traditions and leads to a more amalgamated world culture.
Take a position and write an essay in support of one of the statements about globalization’s effect on culture. Use sociological concepts you’ve learned from the textbook to support your position.
Your essay must include the following:
A definition of culture according to the text as well as in your own words
A definition of globalization according to the text as well as in your own words
A clearly stated opinion on the sociological rationale for your support of one of the statements on globalization’s effect on culture
Specific sociological concepts as the basis for your discussion; be sure to define the sociological concepts you use and incorporate them into your discussion.
A logical argument for your position
Option 2: Globalization and Family Traditions
Review Chapter 4, “Social Structure,” in your textbook, Experience Sociology, Fourth Edition. You may also want to review Chapter 3, “Culture.”
Use what you’ve learned to argue how globalization, specifically the migration of American manufacturing jobs overseas, has impacted culture at the family level (micro), at the community level (meso), and on a societal level (macro). Include in your essay your own opinion about whether globalization is good for American families.
Your essay must include the following:
A logical argument based on the readings, your own personal experience, and/or the experiences of others.
A clearly stated opinion about whether globalization is good for American families.
