What is the typical western perspective of self? (Stems from Descartes and James)

The typical western perspective of self, references the idea that each person is its independent being with independent thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It refers to how the world around defines who we are.

How has the concept of self evolved into something more relational?  multiplicity, embodied?

The concept of self shifted from the idea that we are individual beings that consists of singular and only a few internal characteristics to more complex rational identities. It’s about the acknowledgement that our sense of self is not a product of our internal thoughts and feelings but rather that the world and environment around us, deeply impacts our behavior, through relationships, social interactions etc.

What is self-awareness?

For Descartes self-awareness was a product of a conscious, rational mind, which he defined in contradistinction to the material, corporal body.

Self awareness is the ability to be conscious about your surroundings and what others do. Is having the understanding of one’s own emotions, thoughts and individual tendencies, capability of being aware of your strengths and weakness, understanding how your actions affect others and yourself. Having this knowledge allows you to navigate through your life making decisions that allow you to find the deeper meaning in life.

What are values and how do they relate to self-awareness?

Accountability TedTalk + reflection

Self Portrait

Values and self awareness are deeply connected. Self awareness is our understanding of our character, identity, and feelings etc. Values provide context for our self awareness and give us clarity to live through them. Together they form our identity and guide us. Breaking habits are not only difficult for their concurrent repetition of them, but rather the value that we hold to them that makes it difficult for us to break.

Role of “others”

P. 376

How do relationships (social relations) affect our “self”?

We as humans unconsciously tend to develop our sense of “self” through relations and interactions from those insignificant and significant others. We mimic others and do certain behaviors depending on the situations. Relations will always mold our sense of self and the comprehension of our internal self.

Importance of language

p. 376

How does language influence our “self”?

Language very much influences the self. Thanks to language we are able to communicate and express our feelings that once were only gestures and later on transformed into language.

The development of language started by gestures such as hand movements and eventually transformed into language.

The world revolves around perception, we gain most of our perception through subjects and objects that have developed their social construction through time. Yet, the meaning and perfection of things around us are given meaning through language.

Dialogical self

Bottom p.377-378

What is the dialogical self?

The dialogical self are the multiple selves we consist of. These selves play a role, such as the role being a student, sibling and different characters we develop through experience and time. These identities or versions of the self change based on our experience and through things that happen in our daily lives. This selves, or we could call them identities shape who we are, however they aren’t fixed, the more we experience, interact with others, etc the more we realize they are part of our lives. This allows us to adapt to different social settings and helps us navigate by switching between them. The idea of the dialogical self is basically that our inner being is always in constant conversation with ourselves, and the environment around us influences the way it acts. This gives us a better understanding of who we are and helps us be more adaptable in different environments.

Self-Integration

Orthogenetic principle

Connectivity Theory

What is meant by integration of different parts of the self?

Self integration is the ability to recognize certain aspects and characteristics of our personality, being able to differentiate and bring together different selves like the self we show we are around our family, friends, and work. Now the orthogenetic principle suggests that as we grow and mature we become more complex individuals that don’t just rely on one identity, and the the connectivity theory ties in with the orthogenetic principle, being aware of this aspects of our identity and comprehending that our identity is constantly changing through the experiences we go through lead us to become more integrated individuals.

How does self-awareness help YOU work towards YOUR goals and improve relationships?

Self Portrait

Self awareness and being aware of what I think of others helps towards my goals because it gives me a better idea of how I view the people around me propelling me to achieve goals and improve my relationships thanks to my understanding.  Being self aware helps me see my strengths and weaknesses, having the awareness and knowledge will guide me to make good decisions that will improve my goals and relationships. When you are aware of your identity, whether it is what matters to you or what you like, you set priorities and will eventually lead to feel fulfilled and make good decisions. Being aware of my emotional reaction towards those around me helps identify emotions, this allows me to manage how to react to things and empathy towards arguments and conflicts.

look at the template i attached below in files..

The concept self is a complex term that is not defined by a singular meaning. The term includes self-awareness, self- identity, social self etc. All of this terms that consist and play role to the perception of our identity. Self is our being that is constantly modified and molded by experiences we go through on a daily basis. The self is not only the idea that the world around us defines who we are but the particular things that happen in our lives. Self-awareness is the knowledge we have about our character essentially who we are; desires, emotions, thoughts, goals. Having this knowledge in mind, gives us clearer understanding about who we are, our strengths, weaknesses and it guides us to make smart decisions that by extent helps us accomplish. Fundamentally self is our identity that we portray to the world and to ourselves depending on the environment and situation. Our self, impacts individuals and the world as a whole once other identities understand that the world has been impacted by people no different than tem. this was the thesis that I used. You can change it, im attaching just so you have an idea.
