and European Union climate goals and energy independence strategies. As Europe
strives to switch over to renewable energy sources, they face an uphill
struggle due to their reliance on Chinese solar panel imports – which dominate
the global market. These findings highlight China’s dominant global position in
solar manufacturing, accounting for an astounding 82% of total production due
to state support and rapid domestic demand growth. Conversely, Europe produces
less than three percent of the solar panels it needs – underscoring its
dependence on imports to meet renewable energy targets. Dependence on Chinese
imports raises serious concerns regarding energy security, economic resilience
and any possible impacts to domestic industries. The research explores the
broader ramifications of import dependence, including supply chain disruption
risk, geopolitical tensions, and sustainability in terms of meeting climate
objectives through imports. This study investigates arguments both for and
against diversifying supply sources, considering their economic, environmental,
and political effects as a means to reducing dependence on Chinese solar
