This is a tough issue that is highly controversial! Traditionally, education has focused on teaching the life skills students will need to be self-determined adults who live as self-sufficiently as possible (the Ecological Framework for Curriculum Development). For the last 10+ years, there has been a growing focus on teaching academic skills to these students. In this article, the authors discuss the ecological framework and how it is impacted by the shifted focus to academic skills. How do we prepare students to be independent adults? Are academics necessary or even appropriate? How do we, as educators, make these decisions? They propose an expanded Quality of Life Framework that includes these functional skills AND academics.
