Pope Urban II Proclaims a Crusade, and the Siege of Jerusalem: Christian and Muslim Perspectives (Spielvogel, Western Civilization, pp. 289-293; MindTap Section 10-4)

Who was Pope Urban II, and how did he make the case for undertaking a crusade to recover Palestine from the Muslims?  What happened to the inhabitants of Jerusalem when the Christian knights captured the city?  How do you explain the extreme intolerance and brutality of the Christian knights?  How do these two accounts differ, and how are the similar?

Deadlines

The textual analysis is due in BOTH the Pilot Dropbox as a Word document AND copied and pasted (NOT attached as a separate file) into the Pilot Discussion forum by the deadline indicated on the syllabus.

Complete two additional follow-up postings by the deadline indicated on the syllabus.

READ THE BELOW GRADING RUBRIC BEFORE WRITING THE ANALYSIS.

Requirements and Grading Rubric

The assignment requires students to:

  1. Respond to all parts of the assigned “Analysis and Group Discussions Prompt” (i.e., questions).  The prompts/questions may be found above, on the Syllabus under Course Schedule, and on Pilot / Communications / Discussions.
  1. Answer every part of the prompt(s)/question(s) with a complete paragraph. Complete paragraphs must include at least five sentences, including a final sentence that explains the quoted passages.
  2. Provide sufficient historical context for analysis and introduce historical figures.
  3. Write in complete, grammatically correct paragraphs and sentences.
    • DO NOT post simple lists or bullet points.  DO NOT simply cut and paste from the textbook or any other source without proper citation.  Consult syllabus concerning academic integrity and plagiarism.
    • Proofread posts for correct grammar and spelling
  4. Support your ideas with references, including direct quotations, to the text analyzed using parenthetical notation. Every paragraph should include at least two (2) direct references to primary and/or secondary sources.  For example:
    • Printed textbook: According to historian Jackson Spielvogel, Odysseus earned his reputation as a god after he blinded the Cyclops (Spielvogel, 67).
    • eBook: According to historian Jackson Spielvogel, Odysseus earned his reputation as a god after he blinded the Cyclops (Spielvogel, 12-3).
    • Include multiple references in a single sentence when appropriate.  For example: In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes repeatedly refers to “man in a state of nature” as being “in a constant state of war” (Hobbes, in Spielvogel, 331,412, 445, 461).
  5. Make your initial posting by the analysis deadline.  The initial posting must be submitted as a Word document to the Dropbox (under Assessment) and copied and pasted into Discussions (under Communication) in Pilot.
  6. Make a minimum of two (2) follow-up postings.
    • Follow-up postings may include extensions of your initial posting, responses to what others have posted, new questions that move the discussion forward and other points you found especially interesting.
    • Simply agreeing or disagreeing with other postings is not enough – explain and support your reasoning.
    • Each follow-up should consist of a complete, grammatically correct paragraph (see points 2 and 5 above).
  7. Submit all aspects of the assignment by the discussion deadline.

***** DO NOT use attachments in the Pilot Discussions forum.*****

Tips

I strongly suggest that you create a folder on your computer where you can create and save your responses to the discussion questions.

  • Compose your analysis as a single Word document.
    • You may also want to type notes on the readings and save them in the same file for future reference.
  • Copy and paste your response from the Word document into the Pilot Discussions forum.
    • While Pilot is usually reliable, I have often lost work while typing into the discussion forum.
