Should high schools make high school students take a mandatory class to prepare students for the workforce?

The question I have chosen is “Should high schools make high school students take a mandatory class to prepare students for the workforce?”

Scholarly Article: The scholarly article I will be using is called “Problem Based Learnin,” by by Phillip L. Cardon, Linda Kinczkowski, and Pamela Speelman. They explain how Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a hands-on approach that focuses on solving real-world problems and developing necessary workforce skills. It involves collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, while also teaching practical use of technology. This approach equips individuals with the knowledge to tackle challenges in a tech-driven workplace, providing a head start for future careers and preparing them for the tech-driven world.

Popular Article: For my Popular Article I will be using the article named “Preparing American Students for the Workforce of the Future,” by Laura Jimenez, who is the director of standards and accountability for K-12 Education at the Center for American Progress. This talks about how the US has a systemic failure in preparing students for college and careers, leading to inequitable opportunities for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students and workers. This has resulted in high dropout rates, unemployment, and a wealth gap between whites and communities of color. The coronavirus pandemic has worsened these gaps, making recovery slower for these groups. To address these issues, a K-12 education research agenda will focus on three systemic gaps: early exposure to career options, holistic preparation for college and careers, and orientation of school accountability systems. Policy solutions will involve integrating laws, regulations, and funding for K-12 schools, higher education, and workforce development, creating ecosystems of schools and local employers, and creating local accountability systems. This approach aims to be more responsive to community needs and desired solutions.
