Story Grammar Components
Children in their school-age years make achievements in their ability to tell and understand narrative stories. During the school-age years, children begin to manipulate the story content, plot, and causal structure of their narratives. School-age children also begin to understand other individuals’ physical and mental states and motivations for actions, which is known as the Theory of Mind construct. Narrative stories written in English have a certain organization to them, which is call story grammar. By the end of the elementary school grades, typically developing children are able to understand the narrative story structure and often include many of the elements of story grammar in the narratives they create.
