Write a one-paragraph summary of one of the opinion editorials listed with the Editorial response essay assignment instructions. Feel free to choose any of the essays, especially the one you choose to respond to in your essay. You are encouraged to use this exercise to get feedback on your summary paragraph so that you can improve it and include it in your editorial response essay.
Submit only one paragraph. (The essay assignment requires a two-paragraph summary, but this exercise is for only the first of the two paragraphs.)
Copy and paste your paragraph from your word processor. There is no need to include submission information, a title page, or a bibliography: just the one paragraph. Do not feel you need to introduce your summary. Do not feel you need to introduce the essay you are summarizing, though your summary should mention the author of the essay. Assume you have an introductory paragraph that precedes this summary paragraph (as you will in your first essay).
Follow the course’s advice for a one-paragraph summary. Use paraphrase indicators. Include citations to the editorial paragraphs.
If you submit a summary within a week of the exercise becoming available, you will receive feedback on your summary.
Grading
A full (one-paragraph) summary that represents a strong effort and is very well done will get a grade of 10 / 10.
A full summary that represents a good effort and is reasonably well done will get a grade between 8 and 9 out of 10.
A summary that seems to represent minimal effort or is not done very well will get a grade of about 5 or 6 out of 10.
A submission of one or two sentences will get a grade below 4 / 10.
As always, not doing the work results in a grade of 0.
