Analyze the mechanisms of damage for acute and chronic exposures in the workplace

The Unit 4 Assignment is an analysis of worker health outcomes caused by exposure to hazardous substances used in the workplace, including the ethical considerations of exposure to known hazards. The Unit 4 Assignment is used to assess your learning related to differentiating between acute and chronic exposures to predict mechanisms of damage leading to injury and health outcomes.

This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin™.

Analyze the mechanisms of damage for acute and chronic exposures in the workplace that can result in injury or adverse health effects and consider the ethical considerations of worker exposure to known hazards.

Who: Individual students
What: Analyze the mechanisms of damage for and ethical considerations of acute and chronic exposures to hazardous substances.
Where: Upload your compiled document to the Assignments folder for Unit 4.
When: Due on the last day of Unit 4 at 11:59PM ET.
Why: To practice accessing evidence-based information about worker health outcomes.
How: Conduct focused research about the acute and chronic health effects of a hazardous substance.

As an environmental health and safety professional, you may be part of the occupational health program for workers, and therefore should be aware of the human health effects of hazardous substances. This assignment is intended to practice accessing databases and evidence-based information about health effects of hazardous substances. Use the information you gathered for the Unit 4 Discussion and expand upon it.

Assignment Details:

  1. Research relevant human toxicology information for your selected hazardous substance, i.e., exposure routes, mechanisms of damage, target organs, cancer site, and symptoms and health outcomes for acute and chronic exposures.
  2. Attempt to verify the accuracy of the health hazard H-statements in the SDS document(s).
  3. Research U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations for the hazardous substance, including information about regulated areas, signs and labels, protective equipment and clothing, housekeeping, medical surveillance, and required employee information and training.
  4. Research the first aid guidelines and prehospital medical management guidelines for the specific hazardous substance.
  5. Fill out the Worker Health Outcomes Report template with your findings: Unit 4 Assignment Template.
  6. Provide in-text citations and references for all sources used to complete the assignment.

Throughout this course and program, your work will be assessed for assignment-specific items and four general criteria:

  • Context and purpose: The Unit 4 Assignment is intended to be written as a formal technical report.
  • Sources and evidence: Any sources you use should be documented in APA format. In-text citations and a reference list are required.
  • Writing style: Your report should be written in your own words, with no grammar or spelling errors.
  • Format and layout: Submit your technical report in one compiled document (.docx or .pdf). As this is a technical report, the formal APA paper format is not required.

Review the detailed grading rubric for this assignment before beginning to work on it.
