Task #9: Movie Assignment – Under One Sky: Arab Women in North America Talk about the Hijab

Use it to answer questions and take notes on the movie.

For the Task:

  1. Watch the movie and take notes.

  2. Write at least two examples from the movie of any of Arjun Appadurai’s scapes (in the handout and the chapter).

  3. Write what you found interesting and/or problematic. 

This film was made after the Persian Gulf Conflict but BEFORE 9/11 and the U.S. going into Afghanistan in 2003.

All of the issues discussed in the film are STILL relevant today. I always say that I will stop showing this when these issues have been resolved or when things stop repeating themselves over and over.

It’s been 17 years since I accidentally recorded it on a VHS from a TV channel called LINK TV. And I am still showing it. 


There are no links for the video on this assignment but the professor did give a transcipt. I can try and see if I can find a link for the movie on youtube. I will send you it if I can find it.
