The goal of this next assignment is to help you develop your skills for critiquing the METHODOLOGICAL RIGOR of empirical studies.

First, re-state the EIP question that you presented in your Step 1 assignment (or its revised version on the basis of the feedback to your first assignment). This assignment builds on the previous assignment.

Use electronic databases/resources to search for studies that provide empirical evidence to inform your EIP question. The articles you select from your electronic search must be peer-reviewed journal articles. (Please note: you will be required to submit your three articles for instructor approval prior to submitting the full assignment.)

Please closely follow the outline below:

First: Summarize your search (1 to 2 paragraphs)

In the summary of your search process, please Identify:

    • the search terms you have used in your work
    • the databases or other sources you have used, and
    • the results you get from this process (i.e. how many articles you found, which were the most useful data sources)

Second: Description and critique of three peer-reviewed journal articles (6 pages)

From the articles you identify, choose three articles that offer the best available evidence relevant to your EIP question and read/review the full articles. State the rationale that informed your choice of the studies discussed in these particular articles.

For each of the three articles, present a description and critique addressing the four parts below. Conduct your analysis for each article separately and consecutively (about 2 pages per research article).

    • Give the APA citation correctly.
    • Identify the purpose of the study and briefly (4-5 sentences) summarize in your own words the method including design (e.g. case study, randomized clinical trial, systematic review, etc.), sampling strategy and sample type and size, measurement (including the type of instrument, type and number of items, validity and reliability) and data analysis (i.e. which strategies, such as statistical test or content analysis were used to draw conclusions from the data regarding the research question/s). Report relevant empirical finding/s as it relates to your practice question. (Do NOT include all the findings; only those relevant to your question). You are encouraged to use the structure of abstracts in journals as a template for presenting a concise summary of the study.
    • Critically appraise this evidence, using criteria you are learning in this course. Evaluate the rigor of the evidence-based on aspects such as validity and reliability of measurements, appropriateness of design for the question, sample and data collection strategies. You are expected to address data analysis strategies just to the degree that you learned about them in the foundation research class (i.e. chi-square, t-test and correlations). Some of the studies may have used more complex statistical analysis about which you did not learn and you are not expected to critique those. Identify at least one strength and one weakness of each article using the criteria for appraising research studies found in class readings and discussed in class. Justify your evaluation, i.e. explain WHY you see these attributes as a weakness or a strength, citing course readings to support your critique.
    • Discuss the applicability of the evidence that you were able to find to the practice situation/problem area that you described in your initial Step 1 paper. How well might this research knowledge be transferred to your individual client or client system or practice area? How could it be adapted to be more applicable?

        Tips:

          • The main goal of this assignment is to demonstrate your critical view of each study’s methodology. This focus should be reflected in the weight (and space) you dedicate to your critique. While an accurate and specific description of each study is important, it needs to be concise while the critique should be elaborate.
          • Focus on addressing the specific questions identified in the assignment. Do not attempt to write a literature review. Focus on answering the specific questions in the assignment outline.

          Third: Summary (1 -2 pages)

After you have presented three article critiques, please conclude with a statement as to which of the studies offers the strongest scientific evidence relevant to your practice situation. In answering this question, you will want to consider balancing your assessment as to what research knowledge is most applicable to your client with which study is the strongest from the methodological viewpoint. Articulate clearly the rationale for your choice and support it with evidence.

It is expected to be up to 10 pages, double-spaced, 12 font. Please also include a reference page applying APA guidelines as applicable.
