This paper has to answer a specific research question, engage with the subject literature and state of the art research, critically appraise the selection of qualitative methods, data collection and outline the steps of analysis as well as discuss the ethical challenges.

Research question

How do consumer perceptions of sustainability in the cosmetics industry influence brand loyalty and purchasing behavior? (to bee modified a bit according to feedback in the attached files)

The purpose of the study is to investigate the increasing significance of sustainability in the cosmetics industry. It aims to explore how customers’ views and awareness of sustainable practices employed by cosmetics brands affect their choices to stick with these brands or change their purchasing behaviors. This research could offer significant new insights on how much consumers consider sustainability when making decisions and how cosmetics companies might adjust their business practices to match consumer expectations.

Research Proposal

6 Elements:

1.Research Question

2.Value Added

3.Methodology

4.Literature Review

5.Steps of Analysis

6.Ethics

1) Research Question However you approach the topic of your research, whether from the policy agenda (what change do you want to see in the world?), or focusing on a problem or a puzzle (something that you empirically observed and which unsettled your expectations), do make sure that you clearly outline your research question. A research question is a meaningful sentence that (often) ends with a question-mark and where every word counts (Alford 1993).

2) Value Added Explain how your research adds new value and originality to the literature. What does your research offer which was not already done in previous works?

Old approach to new topic • New approach to old topic • Combine previous insights • Refine previous insights

Value Added must be explained before Lit review, in the Introduction!

3) Selection of qualitative methods Carefully choose your methods and make sure you can defend and justify that choice. It is recommended to use both a theoretical framework and a data collection method. Make sure your methods are anchored to your research question – ultimately they are to help you find an answer to it! Explain whether you plan to carry out your own data collection and how you would go about this process (selecting respondents, case studies, or cases). If you plan to rely on an existing qualitative dataset, explain its location, how it was originally collected and how you would approach it in order to address your unique research question.

Tool/lens used in entire work • Recommended: Datacreating or data-using Method (survey, interviews…) + Theoretical Framework; Different shapes: 1) Concept: A word…yet more than a word 2) Model: A simplified explanation of reality 3) Combinations of the above

Examples theoretical framework : Public Choice, Conditionality, Bounded Rationality, Public Policy, Fiscal Federalism, Negotiation Theory, Public Sector Economics… •

Also: Cultural Economics, Hofstede’s Culture Indicators, Business Studies: Porter’s Five Forces, PESTLE, Product Life Cycle…, Policy Network Analysis, Varieties of Capitalism…

4) Literature review Review the different bodies of literature which are closely connected with your research question. Focus on giving the reader the information they need to understand how your research adds value to the existing literature. Make sure you do not only review and cite the different influential papers in your field. Try entering into a dialogue with what other (more experienced) researchers have written. If you critique others’ work, please do so diligently, carefully and adhering to rigorous academic standards.

Must include: • Short explanation of all bodies of literature relevant to your Research Question (key works and scholars, and how complete each other) • Focus on how your research builds on each of them Can include: • Fit into overall literature (explain fields, any interdisciplinarity, when started? How evolved?) • Which are the main ideas, theories/models and methodologies?

4) Steps of Analysis Clearly outline the different steps of your analysis, the logic of enquiry, the type of coding (if relevant) and theorybuilding elements of your research proposal.

5) Ethical Challenges Discuss any ethical challenges that your research project might pose to your participants, or to the data. How will you mitigate these ethical challenges? The second question is as important as the first one.
