Exploring the Differences between Qualitative and Quantitative Data Collection Approaches: A Mixed Methods Perspective

Researchers must take into account the nature of theories and research interests to determine the best approach for collecting data. Some theories are quantitative in nature, and others are qualitative. Researchers may also prefer to collect quantitative versus qualitative data, or a combination of the two, in order to answer specific research questions of interest. It is important to understand strengths and limitations of these approaches and to recognize when it is appropriate to apply each.

For this Assignment, you will examine qualitative and quantitative data collections approaches in a 3-5 page expository paper. Be sure to address the following in your paper:

Part 1. Differentiate between quantitative and qualitative data collection approaches.

Explain what each approach entails.

Describe two benefits and two limitations of each approach.

Analyze the major differences between the two approaches.

Part 2. Choose a research topic that is of interest to you. Briefly describe the topic.

Develop a research question you could address using a qualitative approach. Explain what you would expect to learn about the topic using this approach.

Develop a research question you could address using a quantitative approach. Explain what you would expect to learn about the topic using this approach.

Discuss two limitations of each approach to understanding the research topic.

Must include in-text citation from these three articles:

Feedback from 1st Draft:
I just skimmed over the paper your submitted. You used the proper APA template, nice work. Overall it seems like Part 1 is covered nicely in your work. There are a few things that do need to be adjusted.

 – The references section is not formatted correctly. They are out of their proper order for APA. Authors are first and then date. You can use APA Formatting and Style Guide (7th Edition) – Purdue OWL® – Purdue University which can help with proper formatting of the references.
– You cited a Sociological bulletin in the middle of the paper, but do not have that in your reference (page 3)
– You also cited Gengler and I do not see that on the references. Also the APA citation is incorrect on Page 5.
– Did Schoonenboom, Schulze, and Wang all provide citation support for all those sentences? Make sure you are giving credit to the author in which the idea came from and not all you use within the paper.
– Can you separate the paper by Part 1 and Part 2, so I know where each section starts and ends?
– I do not see where Part 2 is developed with some of your own ideas about a research question related to a topic that interests you. You are to develop research questions for qualitative research and quantitative research and explain what you would expect to learn, and limitations. This is your ideas with support of other authors, not necessarily saying what other authors did.
