One problem I see in my classroom is the standardized tests or assessments that must be given by teachers for not only the district but for the state. The assessments are not always an accurate representation of what a student may know. Some children get very anxious during testing and it does not show an accurate description of all they know. Their also may be other factors that can hinder performance during testing such as illness, sleep deprivation, English as a second language or disabilities. The tests also don’t show a child’s creativity and they take up more time in the classroom during the week giving the tests that could be spent on more playful learning. The purpose of this research is to show how the standardized tests are not as accurate as teacher created assessments that are often done daily to help guide children to use their creativity and strengths for academic achievement.
