The Complexity Of Fatherhood: A Comparative Analysis of ‘My Papa’s Waltz’ and ‘Those Winter Sundays’

For this assignment, you will compare and contrast two poems discussed in class by two different writers and do a close reading of the texts.

It is important that your essay:

  • uses two poems that have enough in common to be compared and contrasted
  • shows your understanding of the poems and concepts you are describing
  • presents several (at least three) parallel points of comparison and contrast
  • arranges points in a logical order.

Keep in mind the following as you are drafting and revising your essay:

1. Is there a clear introduction, body, and conclusion?

2. Does the introduction provide sufficient background for the reader?

3. Is there a clear thesis sentence?

4. Do paragraphs show an understanding of the poems and concepts described?

5. Are there several (at least three) parallel points of comparison and contrast?

6. Are points arranged in a logical order? (text-by-text or point-by-point)

7. Is there enough textual evidence?

Your assignment submission should be 2-3 pages in length, employ proper grammar and punctuation conventions, and conform to the correct MLA format.

When you quote, use MLA style as your guide.

Use present-tense verbs when writing about literature.
