Purpose:
In class, we have been studying Past the Shallows by Favel Parrett to investigate and reflect on different ways of reading literary texts. This task is designed to allow you to demonstrate your analytical skills, and your knowledge of the novel and its context.
Intended Audience:
Your audience is an intelligent adult who understands literary analysis, metalanguage, and the author’s context. Your response must include a thesis which will allow you to promote and prosecute an argument.
Task Description:
You are to write an argumentative essay in response to ONE of the prompts provided.
An unseen extract from Past the Shallows is provided for each prompt.
You are required to include analysis of the extract in your response. Remember to focus your discussion primarily on the author’s use of literary elements to explore the given issue.
Your response should include:

A thesis statement which directly addresses the question and states an overall position

Analysis of the exploration of the issue in novel

Analysis of stylistic and structural choices in novel

Essay structure (introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion)
