Component 2 – 5000-8000 words

Component 2

Thesis paper – 5,000 words min, 8,000 words max

The second assessment is a thesis paper in the style of a publishable, peer-reviewed journal paper of 5,000 to 8,000 words. It must be directly relevant to the student’s programme of study and it must set out a coherent academic argument or report. It must be a literature review. Depending on the student’s field of study, will follow an appropriate method of literature reviewing, which is to be a quasi-systematic review. This type of paper will exclusively draw on data from published sources, and it will draw on an established and justified approach to literature searching. 

Recommended structure incl. recommended word count:

Abstract – 250 words (Aims, Background, methodology, results, conclusion)

Introduction (this can draw on your work in the proposal) – 750 words max

Methods (this will again draw on your work in the proposal) – 1,000 words max

Quasi Systematic Review

  1. Research Design: Exploratory research design

  2. Research Approach: Qualitative method

  3. Research Philosophy: Interpretivism philosophy

  4. Data collection:Secondary data only ( secondary data derived from primary research studies)

  5. Data analysis: Thematic Analysis (Inductive)

Search Strategy (How will you search?)

  • Databases to be searched, and why these
  • Search terms to be used incl. Boolean operators
  • In- and exclusion criteria

Results incl. Critical Appraisal (brief summary) – 2,500 words max

Critical Appraisal Strategy (Which critical appraisal framework or tool will you use?)

  • Purpose of critical appraisal (exclusion of papers vs understanding papers)
  • Tools you could use:
  1. Newcastle-Ottawa tools for observational studies (cohort, case-control or cross-sectional)
  2. Cochrane Risk of Bias or EPHPP for experimental studies
  3. CASP or Joanna Briggs for other study designs

Analysis & Discussion – 2,500 words max

Conclusions – 1,000 words max

 

Component 3

Appendix – 5,000 words max

The third assessment is an appendix of up to 5,000 words that you submit in one file with your thesis paper. The appendix will include a data summary sheet for each paper. It will also include the critical appraisal information, structured by the critical appraisal framework that you are using, for each paper that you reviewed. 

The data summary sheet needs to address:

  • Full reference (does not count towards word count)

  • Method used in paper

  • Main findings that are relevant to your literature review

  • Summary of critical appraisal (scientific strengths and weaknesses of the paper

 

Note

  • Demonstrates excellent understanding of the complex issues and methodologies at the forefront of public  health

  • Demonstrates an excellent knowledge of the  topic

  • Is informed by independent critical thinking

  • Has a research question which has been very clearly formulated, with a convincing rationale for it, which is placed within an appropriate context

  • Uses the most appropriate methodology and study design for the research question, and justifies the choice Demonstrates extensive understanding and critical use of theory(ies) which is relevant to the study

  • Illustrates a deep appreciation of the diversity and complexity of the chosen research context

  • Demonstrates a deep appreciation and understanding of the ethical implications of public health research and research governance
    Undertakes highly competent analysis of the data and situates the findings in the appropriate context

  • Is based on rigorous argument; and is accurately supported by evidence from a wide range of material including primary sources and current research

  • Demonstrates a critical awareness of the strengths and limitations of the study

  • Demonstrates exceptional presentation including:

  • Highly competent use of structure and language

  • Full and accurate referencing
