Part C – Primary Prevention Paper Guidelines – Grading
Criteria (Rubric)
This paper is designed to help you think about how you, as
a nurse, can prevent a disease and promote health within a specific patient
population. You will design strategies for health promotion/primary prevention
that will reach a large group of people or a community (e.g. WPUstudents;
pregnant women in a certain borough, etc.).
Each student selects a health problem from any of the
seminar presentations posted for the semester and submits to instructor via
BlackBoard for approval by end of module 3. Onc eapproved, student will develop
a written paper (five-page maximum excluding references) and include the
following headings (Significance of health problem, Strategies for health promotion/primary
prevention, and Variables impacting health promotion/primary prevention):
I.
Significance of health problem to
health status 30%1. Implications of age, gender, ethnicity if appropriate2.
Incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, cost implications3. Identify a
population of focus – be specific
II.
II. Evidence based strategies for
health promotion/primary prevention35%1. Health teaching principles (how would
you assess readiness to learn, subjectrelevance, reading level, learner
engagement, etc.)2. Health teaching approaches. Create an outline of the
content of what would betaught. How long would the presentation be, where would
the presentation take place, and what format would the edcuation be taught in)
III.
III. Variables impacting health
promotion/primary prevention goal attainment 25%relevant to health problem
(cultural, legal, psycho-socio-economic, family variables)
IV.
IV. Organization, grammar, spelling,
APA style of writing, meets page 10%requirements, and must have a minimum of
three references (at least 2 current journalreferences.) 100%This paper must be
submitted to Safe Assign prior to submission deadline. The similarity shouldnot
exceed more than 20%. To avoid high similarities result, be very careful about
quotes andusing other people’s material. Avoid the overuse of direct
quotations, especially long ones.Paraphrasing is usually more efficient and
makes it easier to avoid extraneous details
3-5 pages, not including your

Title of Your
Paper in Italics
This section is the introduction to
your topic and worth 30 points. State the topic (disease) of
concern and your population focus. This is the basis of your
decision to implement prevention
interventions. You will need one to two well written
paragraphs. The first paragraph should
speak to the impact of the disease in general. How many
people in the nation, or in the world,
have the disease? What is the cost in terms of quality of
life/death? (incidence, prevalence,
morbidity, mortality, economic cost). This information
should be cited from a minimum of two
peer-reviewed journal articles.
The second paragraph can address
these same “costs” in terms specific to your focus group. Is
there are higher rate of incidence, prevalence, morbidity,
mortality, or economic cost associated
with your group? Be certain to indent paragraphs. You will
also need to in-text cite all your
evidence in APA format throughout the paper. (Jones, 2023).
Keep the similarity rating below
20% by avoiding direct quotes: paraphrase instead. If using
direct quotes, they must be cited
appropriately, “Direct quotes require a page number (or
paragraph number if page numbers are
unavailable) with the citation” (Jones, 2023, p 76).
Health
Promotion/Primary Prevention Strategies
This section describes how you, as
a nurse, can impact health in your community and is worth
35 points. In one or two paragraphs, describe evidence based
prevention strategies supported by
peer-reviewed journals. Create a program in your community
where you can implement this
strategy. Describe how you program is organized. Is it a
one-time session at a community center
or health fair? Is it a weekly support group? Is it
interactive, virtual, in-person etc… What health
teaching principles should you consider specific to your
population and learner engagement,
literacy, and relevance?
Variables
Impacting Health Promotion/Primary Prevention Strategies
This section describes a minimum of
three variables that can impact the success of your
program. In one paragraph, identify cultural, legal,
psycho-socio-economic, family variables
specific to your population. This section is worth 25
points.
Summary
It is always good to summarize your
main points. Three to four sentences should suffice.
Restate your topic and focus group. Restate the necessity
and effectiveness of your prevention
strategy. Restate how your program can overcome variables
and successfully limit disease in
your target population. You will need to add a reference
page. References begin on a new page
following the last sentence of your paper’s text.
References
References are doublespaced and ordered alphabetically. They
are formatted with a hanging
indent. The first line of each reference is flush with the
left margin. Subsequent
lines/rows of an individual reference are indented 0.5
inches from the left margin.
Examples in proper APA format are below.
