The films Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In (note, in APA titles, are in italics) delve into numerous themes relating to concepts discussed in your textbook and presented in supplemental videos. Both films include discussions related to the following sociological concepts, to name a few concepts, which should be applied/used in your discussion.

  • media representation
  • the social construction of masculinity and femininity
  • gender inequity
  • sexism
  • violence
  • rape
  • self-image
  • eating disorders
  • race
  • body image
  • media centralization
  • labeling, deviance
  • sexualization of young girls
  • objectification of women’s bodies
  • self-objectificaton
  • toxic masculinity
  • suicidal and homicidal violence
  • gender role socialization

After watching both films and reflecting on the course material presented:

  1. Discuss the main points of both documentaries, paying keen attention to the aforementioned issues, and, their effects on the social expectations and lives of young girls, boys, men, and women.
  2. Your analysis should identify and include the Sociological Perspective(s) and relevant terminology covered in this course, listed above and also discussed in chapters 3, 4, 11, 16, and supplemental videos and articles provided in CANVAS,  and how they relate to the films. You need to think like a sociologist as you view the films, employing the methodology of Content Analysis, and applying the relevant theory and terminology in your discussion.
  1. Finally, personally reflect on what the films meant to you and how the mass media has contributed to your notions of beauty, sexuality, and gender.

Please make sure that you also meet the following guidelines:

      • A well-written essay will demonstrate mastery of concepts presented in the textbook, film, and relevance to sociological inquiry and your personal life.
      • This is a Sociological Analysis of the films you will view. Therefore, as you view them consider the Sociological Perspectives studied in this course and use these theories to analyze them.  You must include at least ONE sociological perspective in your discussion, although you can address all the major ones for your analysis.
      • You must also use the relevant sociological terminology that is introduced throughout the textbook, those included in the prompt, and in the chapters assigned for this assignment.
      • As you organize your essay make sure to apply all of the rules that were addressed in your ENC classes. If you have not taken the ENC classes please make sure to contact me, there are resources available in the course to guide you.
      • Essays must meet a minimum word count of 1000 words and be typed in the standard 10-12 font double-spaced.  Failure to meet the minimum word count requirement will also result in a 0 grade- the essay will not be accepted.
      • Essays must be written in a grammatically correct manner.
      • Essays must conform to APA format.
      • There is no need to use outside sources but whether or not you do, all sources consulted (paraphrased or not) must be cited according to APA standards and must include bibliographic references (including quoting or citing from the film).  Keep in mind that both Films and the Textbook (there are assigned chapters for this assignment) are the three main sources you will use for this essay.
      • Plagiarism or other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and result in an ungraded assignment (hence a “0” for the assignment).  You cannot copy/cut and paste exact content from a site- the program checks for this and will alert me.
