Pick one of the following questions and write a Paper response. The Final Paper needs to be at least 1,200 words, in your own words, with citations. Up to 25% of each response can consist of cited quotes or paraphrases.
Make sure that you cite any quotes or paraphrases that you use. Remember if 2 consecutive sentences are paraphrased, each one needs a separate citation. If you create a Bibliography/Works Cited page, it will not count towards the minimum number of words for your Final Paper.
Remember the Final Paper is due by the last day of class; if you want the opportunity to revise the assignment, the draft of the Final must be submitted by May 13.
1. At the turn of the 20thCentury, the U.S. Federal Government took direct control of the processes related to the admission, processing, and in some cases rejection of immigrants into the United States. Since then, America’s immigration policy and the laws that govern it, have varied and shifted over time. Discuss some of these shifts. Include answers to the following questions: How did the American public and the government view immigrants/immigration in the time period you are discussing? Explain or provide an example. What factors contributed to how immigrants were viewed and treated in the U.S. during the time you are discussing? Explain. As part of your Paper include 3 immigration laws. For each law, explain what it was/what it did or does, the group or groups that it affected and how. Are the laws in place today? If so explain, if not explain the change. (You can discuss U.S. immigration policy in regards to voluntary immigration, refugees, and, or asylum seekers).
2. Compare and contrast the Irish Immigrant/Irish American Experience to the Italian Immigrant/Italian American Experience. As part of your Paper include the answers to the following questions: What were some of the push factors for immigration for each group-list and explain at least 1. What were some of the pull factors- list and explain at least 1 for each group. How were the members of each group treated in the U.S. when they began arriving in large numbers? Include specifics. What factor/factors led/contributed to this? Did the situation/treatment change with time? In what way? List and explain 2 similarities and 1 difference in the (immigrant and post-immigration) experiences of these two groups in the U.S..
3. During the late 1800s/early 1900s the U.S. government passed a series of laws that limited and then restricted immigration from China to the U.S.. Several of the aforementioned laws then faced legal challenges. Pick and discuss 2 of the exclusionary laws and 1 legal challenge to them. Include the answers to the following questions: Why were these laws created? What were some contributing factors? What did each of the laws do specifically? What effect did it have? Which law was being challenged? Who challenged it? What happened? What was the argument? What did the Supreme Court decide? When were the Exclusion Acts repealed? What happened?
4. Discuss Executive Order 9066 and the effect that it had on the Japanese American/Japanese Immigrant community. As part of your Paper, include the answers to the following questions: What was Executive Order 9066? Why was it created? What event/events contributed to its passage? Describe the events that unfolded in the U.S. as a result of the passage of the Executive Order. What happened during the period in which the order was enforced? How did internment in the U.S. work/function? What effect did it have on the Japanese American/immigrant community? Include and discuss at least 1 legal challenge to Japanese Internment- who filed the challenge (on whose behalf was it filed)? What happened? What was the outcome of the case? How did Japanese internment in the U.S. come to an end?
