Step 1: Write an analytical essay of at least 1000 words on ONE of the following stories:
- William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily”
You should focus on some particular aspect of the story (symbolism in “A Rose for Emily,”) and through analysis of that particular aspect set forth an interpretation of the story.
This research paper is NOT to be a biographical study. It is to be a work of critical analysis. It should be thesis-driven, which means that you will posit an argumentative thesis that will enlighten the reader as to the possible meaning(s) of the text. Use your research to help prove your points. Thus, all research must concentrate on the story being discussed, not on the author’s life, and should offer a critical approach to the work in question.
You must use at least 3 secondary sources. Students should use the CSU library’s electronic databases, like the MLA International Bibliography or Jstor to find these sources. Students should NOT use excerpted collections of criticism, such as the Dictionary of Literary Biography or Encyclopedia of Criticism. The primary text (the work you are writing about) does NOT count as one of the required three sources, though you should use and cite that source in your essay as well. Note that sources found via a Google search (or some other similar search engine) of the World Wide Web are NOT allowed.
You must cite all sources referred to, no matter how much you’ve paraphrased the idea and regardless of how oblique your reference is. If you are quoting something not specifically referred to in your textbook, consult the MLA Guide available through the library or instructor. Essays must follow MLA format and guidelines and should include a Works Cited page.
From buyer: I have created an annotated bibliography with sources if needed. Please make sure the sources that are used are what is asked.
