Assignment III. Looking toward the future (25 points: 10 outline; 15 final draft); The outline was centered on 1. Specificity of evidence 2. Engaging in an academic discussion
PROMPT: How do we create a food system that aligns itself with “donut” principles: it doesn’t overshoot beyond the ecological ceiling but provides healthy and nutritious foods in an equitable manner?
The various examples of industrial agriculture we have examined including corn production in the Corn Belt and hog production in Eastern North Carolina both exemplify ecological overshoot (air pollution, biodiversity loss, freshwater withdrawals, N/P loading, climate change, land conversion/erosion) and social shortfalls (in areas of health, food, water, income&work, political voice, social equity) as seen in the donut. How could the US do things differently moving the needle in both the ecological and social realms in the right direction?
In your final paper, you’ll present a vision informed by the general academic debate about green growth vs. degrowth as alternative solutions for the future. Which “camp” and its views do you support?
