GOOGLE EARTH BASICS
Download Google Earth Pro on your laptop from: https://www.google.com/earth/versions/ – if you have problems loading it on your laptop, it is available in ISC 216 & ISC 236
Some tips on using Google Earth (we reviewed these in class on 3/7):
- Experiment with different layers; turning on many layers may clutter the map, so turn them on when you zoom into an area you want to “visit” (most also have thresholds, to display only when you zoom in tighter).
- Turn on layers that will link you to photos, under the “Photo”, “Gallery”, and “More” folders. These layers are great, but too many may clutter your map and make it slow to draw. The Terrain layer is great for viewing physical features.
- Some satellite imagery will be out of date or have low resolution – you’ll probably see two dates at the bottom of the image: the image date, and the copyright date. If the image is blurry, you should also examine historical imagery, using the tool that looks like a clock with a green arrow (you should use this tool frequently!)
- The Street View tool should also be used frequently (drag the orange person icon to the map – streets [blue lines} and 360-views [blue dots] will display when available).
- Zoom in and out (with the +/- buttons or slider bar – or the scroll button on your mouse).
- Pan around with the “hand” cursor on the screen.
- Rotate the image for better viewing (use the circle around the compass or hold down the ctrl key while you move the scroll button on your mouse; you can reset north if you lose your way!).
- Tilt: Hold the shift key and move the scroll button or while holding the left mouse button down – to tilt up or down and view in 3-D.
