Here are the requirements for the Essay:
The purpose of the historical essay is to analyze historical facts in order to inform and persuade the reader.
Essays include three parts: an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. I need an introduction in which you state your thesis (argument), multiple body paragraphs (see attached docs for a better outline) where you introduce and analyze evidence to support your thesis, and a conclusion.
Formatting and Sources
It must follow the appropriate guidelines specified.
- Should be double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, pdf on google docs.
- Underline or highlight your thesis and your main ideas (topic sentences).
- There is no length requirement, but a good A essay is usually three or more typed pages.
- Each paragraph should include at least three cited examples to support your main idea. There are 9 examples to be used in the essay in total, 3 in each body paragraph. I will give you the examples you need to cover in each paragraph, you can distribute them to each paragraph as to make it coherant, but there must be 3 in each of the 3 body paragraphs.
- The examples: The Indian Removal act of 1830, Abolitionalism and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Seneca Falls Convention, The Cotton Revolution, Nat Turners Slave Rebellion, Manifest Destiny, US-Mexican War, The Missouri Compromise, Scott v. Sandford.
- Do NOT worry about citations, do NOT use any outside references/books/online sources to write the essay. Just use the examples provided to write the essay.
- The essay should generally avoid use of first/second person point-of-view (you, your, I, my, etc.).
- Also, make sure you cover the entire time period.
- It would be really helpful if you could get it to me a bit earlier than the deadline so I can tweak or make changes as neccessary.
